Xiao Yan Zi -
Two words come to mind: crazy girl. But crazy in a cute way I guess. She's got gall, attitude, and a fiery temper. But she's also got generosity, loyalty, and an unrelenting conscience. The story would have ended long ago if Xiao Yan Zi just decided to sit pretty in her new role as "Princess Returning Pearl." But she's always considered her royal titled borrowed, and the story becomes all the more interesting as Xiao Yan Zi and the rest of her poor followers embark on a long journey to untangle this biggest twist of fate.

Wu Ah Ge a.k.a Yong Qi
Poor Yong Qi. Falls in love with a hopelessly ditsy girl like Xiao Yan Zi, and pretty much has to spend the rest of his life worrying about her. Throughout much of the series, all you ever see is him running after her, protecting her, and fighting for her. But it is exactly this kind of thoughtfulness that makes Yong Qi such a likable character. Despite the fact that he is the son of the emperor, he has none of that haughty air that one would expect. What else? He's smart, level-headed, cute, and even knows how to fight. You can't ask for much more in a guy.

Zi Wei-
By now, it should be no surprise that Zi Wei stands no contest to Xiao Yan Zi, at least in my opinion. Yet, Zi Wei is essential. She's what keeps Xiao Yan Zi in check -- that Yin and Yang sort of thing. There are times, however, that Zi Wei's tenderness and kindness translate into an overly gushy weakness. I can't stand her crying scenes, which come in every other act because she's just about the unluckiest person of them all. She's such a good person sometimes that it makes you want to scream. For instance, why on earth would she ever want to help Rong Muo Muo after the nasty way she treated her? She should've just let the old witch die at the execution. In other words, Zi Wei's sweetness is, after some time, simply a tooth ache.

Ar Kang -
Wow. This guy is like an open target, open to praise and bashing. Let's just start with the good stuff. He's the leader of the pack. He's the one with the brains. He's got the physique for fighting. (He's also got the height that leaves poor Yong Qi in the dust sometimes). He gets Zi Wei, and they're supposed to be a touching pair of lovers. But here's where the good parts end. Ar Kang and Zi Wei are simply a gushy pair -- overly emotional, sometimes phonily dramatic. Ar Kang has this infamous temper, and when Zi Wei suffers any misfortunes (which happens far too often), he loses his mind. It's kind of sweet, I guess, except it's also kind of scary when you actually watch those eyes of his bulging out in insanity. After awhile though, you get used to it.

Jin Suo-
Now that the four main characters are out of the way, I leave no further discretion for the supporting cast. My first victim: Jin Suo, Zi Wei's sister-like servant. This role would be perfect if Jin Suo was the shy, quiet type. She would be blindly loyal to Zi Wei, but also friendly to others. Not true in the series. Jin Suo almost has this obsession with Zi Wei, and she's the one that sharply opens her mouth anytime anything happens to her master. When she tags along wanting to be Ar Kang's second wife, I almost puked. She's not cute. In fact, that pointy face and the slanted eyes grow tiresome in certain instances. The only good thing about Jin Suo is that she findes her self-respect in the end and settles down with Liu Ching.

Liu Ching -
Boy, if I thought Ar Kang was overly temperamental, Liu Ching should be the king of ballistic mood swings. Right from the beginning, he ate sour grapes when he saw that his beloved Zi Wei had been snatched up by Ar Kang. I guess that's not too good of a feeling, but Liu Ching went on this silent jealousy rage that totally drew away his appeal. In the end though, he redeemed himself. He was the reliable rescuer in all sorts of instances, a fighter to the end. And I guess Qiong Yau was fair. Liu Ching and Jin Suo were the most neglected people matchmaking-wise, so it's appropriate that they got together in the end.

Liu Hong-
After these last couple of cast bashings, it may seem a wonder why I even claim to like Huan Zhu Ge Ge. But I do like some supporting characters - and Liu Hong, Liu Ching's sister, is in the top list. I feel kind of sorry for her since she didn't get hooked up with anybody in the end! But Liu Hong is a good sport. She's kind of like a cross between Xiao Yan Zi and Zi Wei -- a fierce fighter with a soft heart. She never over acted, but was constantly in the picture, even if it was just the background. So here's a little spotlight on the much deserving Liu Hong!
